TLDR; The Culture Code

TLDR; is a series of book reviews for the industrial automation professional. While this particular read is not specific to industrial automation field, it is specific to those who want to build (or work in) highly effective teams.

The Culture Code, by Daniel Coyle, seeks out teams that perform in the top 1% of their field for at least a decade and investigates their success. These teams include Google and the Navy SEALs, amongst other less recognizable groups: a specific team of thieves in Europe, a high-end restaurant chain and an odd comedy club that started the career of several popular actors. It is both an informative and pleasant read.

Three basic skills set these teams apart. From the book, "Skill 1- Build Safety- explores how signals of connection generate bonds of belonging and identify. Skill 2- Share Vulnerability- explains how habits of mutual risk drive trusting cooperation. Skil 3- Establish Purpose- tells how narrative create shared goals and values. The three skills work together from the bottom up, first building group connection and then channeling it into action."

Colorful and actionable examples are given from group, so each skill is covered in depth. The interviews are candidate and interesting. The groups discussed all give ideas for improving your team. I can identify a number of flaws and ways to improve from this read, and I bet you can, too!
