TLDR; Fiber Optics: Devices and Systems

TLDR; is a book review series.

Peter Cheo is a true subject matter expert on fiber. This book is technical minutae beyond what most of us need. Just look over the names of the chapters are...

  1. Introduction

  2. Field Relations for Dielectric Waveguides

  3. Planar Dielectric Waveguides

  4. Cylindrical Dielectric Waveguides

  5. Dipersion, Mode Coupling and Loss Mechanisms

  6. Glass Materials, Fiber Fabrication and Characterization Techniques

  7. Light-Emission Processes in Semiconductors

  8. Properties and Growth of Semiconductor Heterojunctions

  9. Semiconducting Lasers

  10. Optical Transmitters

This did not get on an industrial control blog by virtue of its many equations. There are a few somewhat useful sections, if you really want to understand the theory of the fiber itself. I would not spend much time on it. If anything, skim chapters 5, 6, 10 and 12.
