TLDR; Automating With SIMATIC

TLDR; is going to be a series of book reviews on automation topics. It is hard to think of a better author to start with than Hans Berger, the author of the best Siemen's books I have ever written. If you are a novice or practiced hand, you can always gain something by perusing his books.

In Automating with Simatic, Hans covers the Step7 platform for older Siemens gear. Think S7-200, 300, 400, or the various HMI devices (PP7, OP3, OP27, etc). Anyone who has inherited older systems and not had a dedicated teacher knows the pain going into reverse engineering equipment. It gets worse with spare manuals. However, if you have anything covered by Hans, you should have the ability to figure it out.

The chapters are...

  1. Introduction

  2. SIMATIC Controllers- the Hardware Platform

  3. STEP 7: Standard Tool for SIMATIC

  4. The Programming Languages

  5. The User Program

  6. Communications

  7. Operator Control and Process Monitoring

As I hinted at before, I came on some plants with legacy gear without documentation. These were nightmares to get working when the failed. However, this book got me through the initial work. It is hard for me to compliment it enough.

Hans Berger has written a number of books on this subject. I can, without hesitation, recommend anything technical which has written.
