SCADA: Secret Computer and Data Assignments

I recently had a co-worker define SCADA as "secret computer and data assignments." While it was funny, it was a comment on how the end users actually feel about our system.

The system we worked on had a number of issues.

  1. Poor documentation: Not only did the drawings not have labels, the panels themselves did not have labels

  2. Frankenstein design: The local control panel and our SCADA system labelled points differently. This is a textbook opportunity for improvements in how you design the HMI

  3. Inconsistent alarming: The systems in question had different alarms locally than were visible in SCADA. Another textbook opportunity for alarm improvements

  4. Minimal training: The system had little "ghosts in the machine" which decided when and how it would work. Given it was cobbled up from multiple pieces, it should be no surprise that it did not work exactly as one would hope

If your customers have this feeling, you should see it as an opportunity to improve. Basic improvements for each are obvious...

  1. Update documentation: We traced the wires and verified what was in the PLC. Unique labels were made for each cabinet.

  2. Test and verify system: Using the newly update wiring diagrams, we updated the documentation in the code with what was in the field.

  3. Improved alarming: What was in the field was made consistent throughout

  4. Training videos: New training videos will be made showing the corrected system, which you will pull up from your work phone.

Keep up the good work!
